Today, 2 February, hydrocarbons21.com sees the light as the first online source to exclusively focus on natural hydrocarbon refrigerants. Offering latest news, products and trends, its goal is to become THE reference source for the hydrocarbons industry.
hydrocarbons21.com is going live. As the first interactive information hub on natural hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants, it will offer news, products & services, papers, policy updates, and events listings needed to keep the HC industry worldwide updated. Its ultimate goal is to spur the global use of HCs, including propane, isobutane or propylene, in cooling & heating solutions where their application can be safe and environmentally superior to synthetic refrigerants. Besides being a showcase for hydrocarbon components, systems and engineering services, the site will facilitate information exchange among engineers, the supplying industry, manufacturers, the scientific world, and anyone with an interest in the environmentally benign and highly energy-efficient refrigerants. It is therefore the first Business to Business (B2B) platform online exclusively focusing on hydrocarbons.

"So why hydrocarbons21? Simply put, the 21st century will be the century of sustainability and hydrocarbons as natural refrigerants have an important role to play. This new B2B platform will help the hydrocarbons industry meet this challenge. Expect over the coming weeks new partners, new products, and cutting-edge news," says Marc Chasserot, Managing Director, Shecco.

As a reference source for the industry, hydrocarbons21.com will actively promote open discussions about the suitability of HCs in different applications and best strategies to ensure their safe use.

Background

hydrocarbons21.com is an initiative by Shecco, a Brussels-based consultancy offering marketing and communications services to support the deployment of climate friendly technologies. Shecco is building on the success of its first platform, R744.com - the world’s leading B2B platform on the natural refrigerant CO2 - to launch hydrocarbons21.com. The mention "21" on the website’s name symbolizes the challenges, but also opportunities, mankind will face in the 21st century. Hydrocarbons as climate-friendly refrigerants will contribute their share so that today's and future generations can make the 21st century a century of sustainability. Moreover, it also refers to the age of adulthood and maturity - just as hydrocarbon technology is a technically mature alternative ready to replace many more harmful F-gases worldwide today.

Congratulations to all involved with hydrocarbons21.com for taking such a timely and valuable initiative!

I'm sure it will quickly become acknowledged as an extremely useful resource, and encourage all those with an interest in hydrocarbons to make full use of the opportunities the site offers for communication and collaboration.

The reference below to the need for HFC-free solutions in the recent communication from the EC on the Copenhagen climate negotiations should provide us all with great encouragement that the level of concern about fluorocarbon emissions is rapidly increasing.

Let's make sure hydrocarbons21.com plays a key role in meeting the growing global demand for climate friendly cooling.

Best regards - Brent

COM(2009) 39 final
COMMUNICATION FROM THE COMMISSION
TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, THE COUNCIL, THE EUROPEAN
ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE AND THE COMMITTEE OF THE
REGIONS

Towards a comprehensive climate change agreement in Copenhagen

Addressing fluorinated gases
The accelerated phase-out of HCFCs over the coming decade under the Montreal Protocol may lead to a rapid increase in HFC emissions, many of which are very potent GHGs. Part of the Copenhagen agreement should include an international emission reduction arrangement for HFC emissions. This will encourage industry to step up intensified research into and development of HFCs with low global warming potential and HFC-free alternatives.
