Embraco’s R600a microcompressor, which fits in the palm of the hand, is forecast to be available on the market in March 2010 to target the electronics market segment and also cater for applications such as portable refrigerators and the automotive industry.
R600a microcompressor for electronics and automotive use
Presented last November at the Electronica 2008 trade show in Munich, Germany, Embraco’s new miniature compressor uses R600a as a refrigerant. Although still in the testing phase, Embraco expects its microcompressor to be available on the market in less than a year’s time, namely in March 2010.

"One of our goals was to show that you can cool such items as equipment, boards and electronic components using refrigeration equipment with compressors," says the manager of Business Development of Embraco, Edu Machado.

Applications include electronics, automotive and portable refrigerators

With this technological innovation, Embraco is targeting the electronics market segment, as the microcompressor may be used in a range of applications, such as information technology, telecommunications, as well as equipment for the medical and military areas.

"In addition to the applications in the electronics market segment, the microcompressor has already sparked interest in such segments as portable refrigerators, personal cooling and the automotive industry, says the manager of Business Development of Embraco, Edu Machado.

Features

The microcompressor’s features include:
  • refrigerant R-600a or R-134a
  • small size - dimensions 25x100mm (model 25) and 50x130mm (model 50)
  • low weight
  • high efficiency
  • the absence of oil in the internal mechanism, which means it can operate in any position, and also reduces the environmental impact

The USA should take a look to Europe, where R600a is long ago a standard.
Global warming is the fault of USA.

This product is a move in the right direction using iso-butane as the refrigerant. More and more products are using this natural refrigerant. If you look on a can of shaving cream, most have propane or butane as the propellant. We are starting to wake up that replacing a synthetic ozone depleting refrigerant (R12) with a synthetic global warming refrigerant (R134a) was not a good idea. However we can correct that with prudent application known since 1930's of the hydrocarbon refrigerants R600a, R290. Nature has already qualified this refrigerant after 3.8 billion years of research and development.
