The direct current operated propane compressor BD100CN from Danfoss is designed for stationary use and can be used with solar panels and a battery. The unit combines high efficiency with low energy consumption by also storing energy when not needed.
As part of a project with a leading food manufacturer, Danfoss has developed a compressor using HC refrigerant to reduce the carbon footprint and that is capable of running on DC power supply with a low power requirement on start up. In addition, it can be used with solar panels and a battery to reduce energy consumption. These BD100CN compressors were fitted in ice cream cabinets where part of the energy supply comes from a 80W solar panel, and the remaining part from a 130 Ah solar deep cycle maintenance free battery. The surplus of energy from the solar panel during day can be charged into the battery.

Danfoss’ direct current compressor is designed for stationary use and features high efficiency while the starting current is reduced to a minimum. The integrated Adaptive Energy Optimizing (AEO) speed mode ensures that the BD compressor will always adapt its speed to the actual cooling demand.

Basic specifications BD100CN:
  • Refrigerant: R290
  • Voltage range: 12-24V
  • Application: LBP
  • Max. condensing temperature continuous: 55°C
  • Max. refrigeration charge: 120g
  • Weight compressor: 4,3 kg
  • COP: up to 2,08
  • High efficiency - low energy consumption
  • AEO - Adaptive Energy Optimization
  • Adjustable variable speed
Background

During the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia 2000, ice cream cabinets using hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants were tested. These have been subsequently rolled out in large numbers in Europe. An extension of the project has been to investigate whether solar panels could be used to reduce energy consumption. This project was run jointly with Danfoss, who developed a compressor using HC refrigerant, that was capable of running on DC power supply with a low power requirement on start up and running so that it could be used with solar panels and a battery.
