Greenpeace has been pushing the U.S. Environment Protection Agency to finally allow GreenFreeze technology in the U.S. market and asks the public for support. Everybody can take action and tell the EPA to finalise the rule on GreenFreeze as soon as possible. The comment period ends July 9th, act now!
GreenFreeze is an ozone-friendly refrigeration technology developed by Greenpeace in 1992. GreenFreeze refrigerators and freezers are HFC-free, using hydrocarbons as refrigerant. They are cost effective, technologically mature and commercially accepted in most major markets. In 1997, GreenFreeze was accorded the United Nations' award for protecting the ozone layer.

Today, 35-40% of the annual global domestic refrigerator and freezer production (~100 million units/year) are GreenFreeze which sums up to currently more than 400 million hydrocarbon refrigerators/freezers in use worldwide. This technology dominating the European, Japanese and Chinese market, all major manufacturers in these markets are producing GreenFreeze refrigerators. In China, 75% of new domestic refrigerators use R-600a, they are also produced in Argentina and Brasil and are available in Canada and Mexico. In the U.S. however, bureaucratic obstacles have so far artificially blocked the way for GreenFreeze technology to enter the market.

After years of advocacy work by Greenpeace, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has now finally drafted a rule that would allow GreenFreeze into the USA. As to maintain the momentum and urge the EPA to pursue quickly with the procedure, Greenpeace calls on the public for support by asking people to sign up to the online petition.

Sign here and now to tell the EPA that we all wish to have climate-friendly, HFC-free refrigerators and freezers available on the U.S. market. The comment period ends 9 July 2010!
