The Environment Programme of the United Nations (UNEP) has initiated a study to look at barriers to the uptake of low global warming refrigerants, including hydrocarbons, in developing countries. By identifying the various barriers to the introduction and the use of HC refrigerants, the questionnaire intends to determine efficient ways and means to overcome them. hydrocarbons21.com invites you to take part in this survey!
With the focus on the use of alternatives within new equipment, rather than for the purpose of converting existing systems, UNEP is carrying out a study on low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants. It is part of the EU-funded “Jump-Start” project and aims to identify the various barriers in developing countries to the introduction and use of low-GWP refrigerants, including hydrocarbons. Thus, it is intended to aid the acceleration of HCFC phase-out in these countries by switching directly to natural refrigerants.

Identifying and overcoming barriers

By identifying the various barriers which may relate to different stages in the development, marketing or servicing of systems and equipment, or which may relate to different stakeholders within the industry, the survey aims to determine ways and means of overcoming such barriers. As a general guide, one may ask: “If I wanted to have a low-GWP system tomorrow, what is stopping me?” and “If I am determined to use a low-GWP refrigerant, what do I need to do?”

Your opinion and experiences are needed! A survey form is now available on the internet and all those involved with refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps – particularly from developing countries (A5 countries) – are invited to take part. Please note that it will only be available until 30 July 2010, when the survey ends.

For further information, please contact barriers@re-phridge.co.uk

Please feel free to leave a comment below this article about what you think the main barriers to an uptake of hydrocarbons in A5 countries are.

I\'m not sure whether you are advocating the direct substitution of HCFCs,presumably mainly R22, by hydrocarbons in existing equipment or just the complete replacement of old R22 units by new HC containing units. I\'m sure that the former might achieved with R290 but I would be worried about the explosion hazard. Is anybody aware of the successful retrofitting of R22 with R290 in a commercial or industrial unit?
